Part 3 – The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde (Chs 10-14)

Gloucester City (Paperback)

Gloucester City was originally named Fort Nassau. The fort, located along the Delaware River, was first settled by the Dutch in 1623. The settlement was an ideal port location along the shores of the river used for travel and transportation. The city became the county seat of old Gloucester County for over 100 years. Once the county vacated the city, it transformed to an industrial hub along the riverfront. The birth of industry caused the need for development of housing and businesses catering to local and visiting patrons. Gloucester evolved from a small fishing community to a bustling city, which was incorporated in 1868. Today, Gloucester City is a global port city along the banks of the Delaware River.

A gripping historical tale about Italian Jews, immigration, and the harsh realities of living on the streets of New York City in the 1890s, this middle-grade novel shares the fast-paced story of nine-year-old Italian Benjamino, born and raised in Napoli, Italy. Craftily escaping adult do-gooders on Ellis Island, Dom creates a life for himself on the streets, soon making a sandwich-selling business with two other boys. Based on Donna Jo Napoli`s own grandfather`s experience, this carefully researched story reflects the experience of many lone child immigrants of the era. Best known as the Fight Doctor, Ferdie Pacheco has lived a dreamer`s life. Instead of finding success in just one career, Pacheco has excelled in numerous fields. He`s been a successful pharmacist, doctor, boxing cornerman, television commentator, screenwriter, author, artist, and more. Now the life of this extraordinary Renaissance man is captured in his one-of-a-kind autobiography, Blood in My Coffee. With wit and candor, Pacheco chronicles his life from his childhood days spent growing up in the Spanish section of Tampa, Florida, to patching up Muhammad Ali while sitting ring-side. Within these pages, Pacheco offers an inside look at the world of boxing, including characters from Miami`s famous Fifth Street Gym, the Ali circus, and working behind the microphone with Marv Albert. He takes off the gloves as he recalls his dealings with the likes of Don King and the Showtime Network. But Blood in My Coffee is more than just a boxing book. It`s Pacheco`s personal journey of realization and growth?from opening a medical office in Miami`s Overtown ghetto to campaigning for better safety regulations in boxing. It`s proof positive that with a little luck and a lot of perseverance, dreams really do come true.

From the author of the “bighearted . . . inspiring” (Vogue) memoir Kabul Beauty School comes a fiction debut as compelling as real life: the story of a remarkable coffee shop in the heart of Afghanistan, and the men and women who meet there—thrown together by circumstance, bonded by secrets, and united in an extraordinary friendship. After hard luck and some bad choices, Sunny has finally found a place to call home—it just happens to be in the middle of a war zone. The thirty-eight-year-old American’s pride and joy is the Kabul Coffee House, where she brings hospitality to the expatriates, misfits, missionaries, and mercenaries who stroll through its doors. She’s especially grateful that the busy days allow her to forget Tommy, the love of her life, who left her in pursuit of money and adventure. Working alongside Sunny is the maternal Halajan, who vividly recalls the days before the Taliban and now must hide a modern romance from her ultratraditional son—who, unbeknownst to her, is facing his own religious doubts. Into the caf come Isabel, a British journalist on the trail of a risky story; Jack, who left his family back home in Michigan to earn “danger pay” as a consultant; and Candace, a wealthy and well-connected American whose desire to help threatens to cloud her judgment. When Yazmina, a young Afghan from a remote village, is kidnapped and left on a city street pregnant and alone, Sunny welcomes her into the caf and gives her a home—but Yazmina hides a secret that could put all their lives in jeopardy. As this group of men and women discover that there’s more to one another than meets the eye, they’ll form an unlikely friendship that will change not only their own lives but the lives of an entire country. Brimming with Deborah Rodriguez’s remarkable gift for depicting the nuances of life in Kabul, and filled with vibrant characters th
